John Happel MD, RVT, RPVI was formally trained in venous disease and vascular surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota which was ranked as the #1 overall hospital in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. He completed his vascular surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 1986.

John Happel M.D. is committed to providing outstanding care in a modern state-of-the-art facility utilizing the latest lasers and the most advanced minimally invasive treatment methods available in the world.

Dr. John Happel

Training, board certification, and exceptional qualifications are essential to getting great outcomes when treating varicose veins. Also important are over three decades of experience specializing in the field of venous disease after completing his vascular surgery fellowship.

Dr. Happel is also known as a leader in his field and is a member of several local, national, and regional vascular and medical societies.

Dr. Happel is a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive endovenous laser surgery. He was the first to perform endovenous laser surgery for varicose veins in the Pittsburgh area.

Vascular Doppler ultrasound knowledge and hands on skills are critical in diagnosing and treating varicose veins. He is an expert in vascular ultrasound interpretation and is also is certified in performing ultrasound in vascular technology. He holds both the RPVI and the RVT degrees from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. He is a laser and radiofrequency specialist and acclaimed expert in minimally invasive catheter techniques.

He has distinguished himself for his expertise in vein care having served as the Chief of Surgery at UPMC South Side for many years.

He acted as the Director of the UPMC South Side Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory. He also served as the director of the UPMC South Side Wound Healing Center. At UPMC, he served as a clinical assistant professor of surgery.
