About the Happel Laser and Vein Center
John L. Happel MD was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and is the founder of the Happel Laser & Vein Center. Dr. Happel completed his initial surgical training at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia and completed his vascular surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He was the only candidate chosen from the entire United States in 1985 to best fulfill the rigorous requirements for the vascular fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Happel is recognized for his vein care expertise and is a leading specialist in venous vascular disease since he began practice in 1986. He is board certified in vascular surgery and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Vascular Surgery. He is also board certified in general surgery and a Diplomat of the Board of Surgery. He is certified in vascular ultrasound interpretation and vascular technology by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and holds the RVT and RPVI degrees. Dr. Happel also served as the Chief of Surgery at UPMC South Side Hospital and was the manager of the South Side wound healing center. Beginning in 1998, he began limiting his practice exclusively to the treatment of venous disease. He is a pioneer in endovenous laser procedures and holds the distinction of being the first minimally invasive surgeon in the Pittsburgh area to perform laser for varicose veins. John Happel MD is a leader in his field and a member of numerous county, state and national medical and vascular societies and has been trained in minimally invasive catheter based techniques. He is a voluntary clinical assistant professor of surgery at UPMC.
Niki Happel RN manages the center and graduated from Duquesne University in 1988 where she received her nursing degree and Bachelor of Science. She first worked alongside Dr. Happel in the operating room as his first surgical assistant. Presently, she serves as liaison between our patient’s health insurance companies and our office and also is the office manager.
